Michigan Citizen Action is a membership-based organization that strongly believes that “liberty and justice for all” is a uniquely compelling, American ideal. In order for this ideal to have broad credibility, all Michigan citizens must participate in the formation of public policy at the local, state, and national levels.
MCA primarily devotes attention to multi-issue programs that reach both mainstream and marginalized populations. MCA does this work in a variety of places, often where other organizations do not typically focus – smaller cities, suburbs and rural areas. Across a variety of places and populations, MCA increases the public’s participation in democracy; thereby giving all involved a critical stake in shaping our collective future.
Our current membership base of approximately 10,000 Michigan residents comes from all across the state – urban centers large and small, rural areas and suburbs. They come from all walks of life – young and old, lower, middle and upper income, male and female, varying racial backgrounds, a variety of faiths and political leanings.
In our 15+-year history we have achieved success in the areas of video franchising, the patients’ bill of rights, children’s health insurance and local civic engagement campaigns across the state. Today our work, in part, focuses on health care reform on both the state and federal levels, the Health Care for America Now (HCAN) campaign, tax and budget reform, the future of energy in our country, creation of sustainable jobs, repeal of Michigan’s drug industry immunity law, broad band build out in all parts of Michigan, and other issues that will make Michigan once again a state that advances the social and economic security of every citizen.
