 Civil Justice
America has a rich tradition of expanding and protecting the rights of all people to participate equally in our democracy. Our civil rights successes are vital to America's promise of liberty and justice for all.

Michigan Citizen Action believes in respecting individual and civil rights, reproductive rights, and the right to privacy. We fight for equality by protecting the rights of immigrants, as well as the rights of individuals of the same gender to marry. The Constitution guarantees fair and equal treatment to all people, and Michigan Citizen Action campaigns to protect these essential rights.

Second Parent Adoption

Children who are born to or adopted by 1 member of an unmarried couple deserve the security of 2 legally recognized parents. Therefore, Michigan Citizen Action is in the process of building a new coalition of organizations who’s purpose is to educate the public about the need for changes in Michigan’s adoption code to be more inclusive.

Currently the Michigan House of Representatives is considering a bill (HB 4259) that would amend the Michigan adoption code to allow two unmarried persons to jointly adopt a child in Michigan. In addition, the bill would clarify that an already existing legal parent would not need to terminate his or her parental rights in order to consent to a second person adopting the child. This bill would not impact existing parental rights for birth parents in any way.

Michigan’s children deserve to know that their relationships with both of their parents are stable and legally recognized. This applies to all children, whether their parents are of the same or opposite sex.
